Using Audacity to Save WAV Files for Audio Greetings

Audacity is a free, easy-to-use program that you can use to record and edit audio files. Use the following instructions to save a pre-recorded WAV file for an Auto Attendant greeting that meets TPx’s specifications.

TPx does not provide technical support for Audacity.  You can get support directly from Audacity or from online resources.

To save a recording as a WAV file using Audacity 2.0.x:

1. Open Audacity.
2. Find and open the sound file.
3. If the file is stereo, click above Mute/Solo and choose Tracks > Stereo Track to Mono.
4. Set Project Rate (bottom left) to 8000 Hz.
5. Choose File > Export.
6. Choose Other uncompressed files.
7. Click the Options… button.
8. Choose WAV (Microsoft) header.
9. Choose “U-Law” Encoding. (This sets the file to 8-bit, and with the 8000 Hz project sample rate, this means you have a 64 kbps bit rate.)
10. Click OK.
11. Name the file and click Save.

To save a recording as a WAV file using Audacity 2.1.2:

1. Open Audacity.
2. Find and open the sound file.
3. If the file is stereo, click above Mute/Solo and choose Tracks > Stereo Track to Mono.
4. Set Project Rate (bottom left) to 8000 Hz.
5. Go to File > Export Audio…
6. Choose Other uncompressed files.
7. Choose WAV (Microsoft) header.
8. Choose “U-Law” Encoding (this sets 8-bit, and 8 kHz).
9. Edit the file name and be sure it ends in “.wav”.
10. Click Save.
11. Click OK.
